Leadership & Volunteering

Tennis Leaders:

Tennis Leaders has been developed to introduce more young people into volunteering. It is the first step on the tennis and sport career pathway for volunteering and potentially, paid employment. It has been designed to offer a wide range of opportunities to young people, providing them with enhanced skills and experience. Tennis Leaders is targeted at 14 – 16 year olds with an interest in tennis and sport – however, this can be extended to 13 and 17 year olds.

There are four Tennis Leader modules, each ranging between 2-3hrs in duration - they can be delivered individually, or together:

  • Planning, Organisation and Communication*
3hrs – no volunteering experience required to complete module
  • Club Media & Communications
2hrs + 6hrs volunteering required to complete the module
  • Playing Partner / Buddy Hitting
2hrs + 6hrs volunteering required to complete the module
  • Competition Assistant
2.5hrs + 6hrs volunteering required to complete the module

*Leaders must take this module before the other Tennis Leaders modules if they haven’t taken Sports Leaders UK (SLUK) Level 1.

Tennis Leaders modules can be delivered locally by trained tutors - there is also the opportunity for teachers to train as tutors.

Competition Organisers Workshop:

In order to get more people competing, there needs to be more opportunities to take part in local competition. Currently there simply aren’t enough competitions to meet demand.

A free 3 hour workshop, designed specifically for 16-25yr olds, can be delivered locally by our Tennis Development Managers, to provide the skills to run a range of competitions.

At the training, attendees will be given a Competition Organisers Toolkit, providing them all the tools and resources needed to run competitions. Competition Organisers can then play an important role in ensuring we keep more young people in the sport.

Young Officials Development Officer:

Tennis has engaged with The Youth Sport Trust's 'Young Official Development Officer' (YODO) programme, to provide a full-time volunteer opportunity to young people who have an aspiration to drive the development of officiating for other young people. Our YODO, Ollie Moore, works specifically in targeted areas to develop and deliver the Tennis Leaders and Young Competition Organisers Workshops.

Other Leadership & Volunteering Resources:

‘Tennis Resources’ are a range of factsheets and templates which have been designed to support tennis providers in the development and management of their programmes or venues. In addition, many of the resources are beneficial to those working in schools and the school sport infrastructure.

Over 250 resources are available within a series of key sections. The ‘volunteers’ section includes:

  • Finding new volunteers
  • Recognising and rewarding volunteers
  • Volunteer agreement form
  • Tips for a volunteer co-ordinator
  • Young People as volunteers
  • Volunteer recruitment checklist
