About Schools Tennis
Tennis is fun, great for fitness and for developing hand eye co-ordination. It can be played by all ages and abilities - boys and girls can play together, so it’s ideal for mixed classes.
Schools give most children their fi rst experience of sport and their early experience can often determine whether they stay in the game. Recent research* (England) shows that tennis in schools is growing, with 79% of schools offering tennis and 42% of schools having a link with a local place to play tennis.
You don’t need tennis courts to play – it can be played in school halls, playgrounds or sports halls and a range of adapted equipment and modified or alternative versions of the game are available.

Schools Tennis Strategy, 2009 - 2013:
The Schools Tennis Strategy sets out the vision, direction and plans for the future of tennis in schools across Great Britain. The strategy, which looks at ‘where we are now’, ‘where do we want to be’ and ‘how we are going to get there’, has been developed by The Tennis Foundation, in partnership with the LTA and others working in tennis and the education sector.
It aims to maximise tennis’ contribution to children and young people and to the Government’s PE, School Sport and Young People strategy (PESSYP). It also sets out how an effective schools programme can contribute to the future success of British Tennis, playing an integral role in growing the base of the sport and supporting talent ID and development. The success of the Strategy is crucial as part of tennis’ legacy for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
We work closely with The Youth Sport Trust, a charity with a mission to build a brighter future for young people through PE and sport.
AEGON - Lead Partner of British Tennis:
As Lead Partner of British Tennis, AEGON supports tennis at all levels, from first steps with a racket to world-class events like the AEGON Championships. Grass roots development is especially important to us. Through the AEGON Schools Tennis programme, we support the LTA and Tennis Foundation in helping teachers get more children playing tennis.
