Primary Schools

Teacher Training:

A 3 hour ‘Primary School Teacher Training Course’ has been developed to give teachers the confidence and tools to deliver tennis to a class of children in a small space.

The course is supported by an innovative DVD teaching aid, which is pupil facing and delivers the demonstrations and progressions directly to the children, allowing the teacher to do what they do best, teach.

In 2009/2010, each teacher (1 per school) that attends the course receives:

  • 3 DVDs
  • Lesson Plan Handbook
  • Mini Tennis Equipment Pack (60 balls, 30 rackets, a roll of barrier tape, a net and 150 certificates)

There is a network of 100 tutors trained and ready to deliver the course across Great Britain. The only cost involved with the course is the tutor fee of £100 + £0.35p per mile travel expenses. If funding can be sourced to cover the cost of the course, then it can be free to attend, alternatively, a small fee could be charged for each attendee to cover the cost.

The following links explain the course and package of resources in more detail:

Out of School Hours Club Toolkit:

This toolkit has been developed to make running an Out of School Hours Tennis Club as easy as possible in Primary Schools.

Out of School Hours Tennis Clubs are a great opportunity to ‘bridge the gap’ between a young person experiencing tennis at school for the first time and participating in a community environment. They are an easy way for schools to add to the range of activities offered to pupils and they are a great way of developing a link with a local place to play tennis.

Lesson Plans:

A series of lesson plans are available to download, which provide the content and structure for a 5 week block of activity.

The lesson plans are provided for three age groups: Ages 4-7yrs Ages 7-9yrs Ages 9-11yrs Each lesson plan contains warm-ups, ABCs and main theme activities, finishing with either a game or competitive activity.

Activity Cards:

A range of over 70 Activity Cards are also available to download online, to help plan and deliver lessons. The activity cards, which can be used in both Primary and Secondary schools, provide ideas for ABCs, tricks, drills, main theme and competitive activities.

Tennis Activity Week Pack:

The Tennis Activity Week Pack is a pre-prepared week of cross-curricular lessons,
based on a tennis theme, aimed at children aged 7-9yrs, but can easily be extended
and adapted for older primary year groups.

The pack contains easy to use lesson plans and worksheets covering; Literacy, Numeracy, Science, History, Geography, PHSE, Music, Art, Design & Technology and PE, with many of the lessons incorporating ICT.

The resource is ideal for delivery during the Wimbledon Championships and National School Sport Week (England), where the school can adopt a tennis theme, however the individual lessons and activities also lend themselves to being delivered in isolation and at other times in the year.

Tennis Assembly Video:

A musical tennis compilation video has been developed for use by teachers and coaches during tennis themed assemblies, or as an introduction to a block of tennis sessions.
