Experience won through as Paralympians Marc McCarroll and Kevin Simpson reached the main draw singles final at the Roma Sport National Wheelchair Tennis Series in Glasgow.
McCarroll completed the last regional event before the Roma Sport National Wheelchair Tennis Series Finals in December with singles and doubles titles. Meanwhile, Terry Smith earned victory in the novice singles.
Top seed McCarroll, second seed Simpson, Peter Moore and Neil Duncan all secured straight sets wins to book their places in the last four. Two-time Paralympian McCarroll and Beijing Paralympian Simpson went on to reach the final with identical records, having both come through their quarter-finals with 6-0, 6-0 wins before defeating Moore and Duncan 6-1, 6-0 respectively.
The final provided more of a challenge for former British No.1 McCarroll, but he still won comfortably, beating Simpson 6-1, 6-1.
McCarroll and Simpson also met in the decisive round-robin match in the main draw doubles, with McCarroll and Ryan Macdonald winning 6-4, 6-3.
With a field of nine players for the novice singles, Terry Smith came through the only match needed to complete the quarter-final and went on to seal subsequent 6-0 and 6-3 victories en route to the final.
After her C Division singles win in Belfast, Tabitha Fung maintained her bid for another title in the novice singles in Glasgow with a narrow 7-5 semi-final victory over Rebecca Sellar. However, Smith denied Fung another tournament success, edging the final 6-4.
But Fung did come out on top in the novice doubles, pairing up with Conor McQuade to remain unbeaten in their three round-robin matches. Fung and McQuade beat runners-up Lesley Johnstone and Sellar 6-1 to ensure the novice doubles title.
McCarroll and Simpson’s fellow Paralympian and Rio 2016 gold medallist Gordon Reid, who won his first ever title at the Glasgow tournament in 2005, paid a guest visit to the tournament to inspire players and present medals.
The 2017 Roma Sport National Wheelchair Tennis Series Finals take place at the Shrewsbury Club on 8-9 December.
