Reigning women’s singles and doubles National champion Lauren Jones claimed her fourth international title of 2016 over the weekend, partnering Frenchwoman Emmanuelle Morch to win the women’s doubles at the Ath Open in Belgium.
Jones and Morch raced into the doubles final after a 6-0, 6-0 win over all-French duo Joelle Demaeseneer and Cathy Portier. The top seeds faced a much tougher task in the final, but held on to defeat second seeds Pauline Helouin of France and Lola Ochoa of Spain 6-3, 4-6, (10-6) as Jones sealed her second international doubles title of the current season.
Jones made an encouraging start to the women’s singles, earning a 6-1, 6-0 win over Portier to reach the semi-finals. The 21-year-old British fourth seed then put up a fine effort against top seed Morch, but the Frenchwoman eventually advanced 6-3, 7-5.
Jones had previously won the Holland Open and Sheffield ITF Futures Series women’s singles titles earlier in the year, also completing the Sheffield tournament with the women’s doubles titles. Jones’s latest success adds to the number of titles won this year by players on the Tennis Foundation’s Wheelchair Tennis World Class Programme.
