Four Brits on the Tennis Foundation’s Wheelchair Tennis World Class Programme were in international action this last week. Lucy Shuker, Antony Cotterill and James Shaw contested the ITF 2 Series Arizona Open in Tucson, USA, where Shuker won the women’s singles and doubles titles. Dermot Bailey contested the ITF 3 Alpi del Mare in Cuneo, Italy, where he finished runner-up in the men’s doubles, partnering Frederic Cattaneo of France.
Arizona Open – 19/03/17
Second seed Shuker produced a fine performance to upset world No.4 Aniek van Koot of the Netherlands in the women’s singles final, thereby ending the tournament having gained singles and doubles titles.
World No. 8 Shuker clinched her seventh career win over top seed Aniek van Koot 6-3, 6-2 just over a year on from her last win over the Dutchwoman in Pensacola in March 2016. Shuker has now beaten current world No. 4 van Koot in three of their last five meetings.
Shuker goes into the final day of the Arizona Open on course in her bid to win singles and doubles titles. Second seed Shuker was taken to a third and deciding set by her doubles partner Dana Mathewson for the second time this year in the women’s singles semi-finals, but held on to reach the final after a 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-1 victory. Shuker faces Dutch top seed and world No. 4 Aniek van Koot in Sunday’s final.
Meanwhile, Shuker and Mathewson had a walkover in the women’s doubles final, becoming champions after their opponents Katharina Kruger of Germany and Kgothatso Montjane of South Africa had to withdraw due to injury.

Second seed Shuker beat Japan’s Manami Tanaka 6-2, 6-3 and now plays her doubles partner Dana Mathewson in a bid to reach the women’s singles final.
Later in the day Shuker and Mathewson also reached the women’s doubles final after the top seeds defeated all-American partnership Shelby Baron and Kaitlyn Verfuerth 6-1, 6-2. They face the second seeds, Katharina Kruger of Germany and Kgothatso Montjane of South Africa, in Saturday’s final.
However, Antony Cotterill and James Shaw’s hopes of reaching the quad doubles final came to an end after a 6-4, 6-0 semi-final loss to second seeds Heath Davidson of Australia and Lucas Sithole of South Africa.
World No. 8 Shuker takes Brit hopes of main draw singles success into Friday’s second day of the Arizona Open after winning her opening women’s singles match 6-0, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals.
Second seed Shuker beat Japan’s Saki Takamuro comfortably ahead of playing Takamuro’s compatriot Manami Tanaka for a place in the semi-finals.
Shuker is also into the women’s doubles semi-finals with her American partner Dana Mathewson. The top seeds raced past USA’s Lauren Haneke-Hopps and Canada’s Maude Jacques 6-0, 6-0. They play American duo Shelby Baron and Kaitlyn Verfuerth for a place in the final.
Cotterill and Shaw have also reached the quad doubles semi-finals after bowing out early in the quad singles. The Brits defeated the USA’s Cecil Easley and Canada’s Mitch McIntyre 6-2, 6-4 t0 earn a doubles semi-final against second seeds Heath Davidson of Australia and South Africa’s Lucas Sithole.

Dermot Bailey and Frederic Cattaneo finished runners-up in the men’s doubles at Alpi de Mare.
Having beaten the Japanese top seeds to reach the final, Bailey and Cattaneo were unable to cause another upset in the final against French second seeds David Dalmasso and Gaetan Menguy as Dalmasso and Menguy took the title 6-3, 6-1.
Dermot Bailey and Frederic Cattaneo booked their place in the men’s doubles final at the Alpi de Mare tournament in Cuneo after defeating the top seeds in their semi-final.
Bailey and Cattaneo defeated Japanese duo Yoshinobu Fujimoto and Kouhei Suzuki 6-4, 6-1 to earn their place in the final against the all-French second-seeded pairing of David Dalmasso and Gaetan Menguy.
Bailey’s hopes of main draw success in Italy remain in the men’s doubles after reaching the semi-finals. Bailey and Frederic Cattaneo of France secured a 6-1, 7-6(4) win over Italian duo Silviu Culea and Luca Spano in their quarter-final. They will play either Japanese top seeds Yoshinobu Fujimoto and Kouhei Suzuki or Italy’s Luca Arca and Massimilano Banci next.
Bailey took third seed Gaetan Menguy to three sets in their men’s singles first round match. However, the Frenchman eventually progressed 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
